About School Governors' One-Stop Shop

In 1998 the Educational Trust, Industry in Education published research illustrating the all-round benefits of volunteers with transferable skills joining school governing bodies. The research, carried out by the University of Luton, highlighted the positive impact that people with an external perspective and a wide range of skills from the world of work can have.

SGOSS was also launched in 1999 in support of the school leadership strand of the Excellence in Cities Initiative. The challenge was a simple one "To recruit governors with transferable skills, to fill vacancies on the governing bodies of schools where they are needed most".

Working with major employers across the public, private and voluntary sectors the School Governors' One-Stop Shop has helped encourage more than 10,000 talented volunteers to apply to join the governing bodies of schools across England. Click here to join the largest group of volunteers in the UK.
