      Future Leaders

1,000 Headteachers retired in 2004/2005, 1,250 retired in 2006/2007 and more are expected to retire in the next three to five years. Further, 60% are over 50 years old and 28% are over 55 years old, highlighting the significant challenge facing the education system. As the pool of eligible school leaders diminishes, governors have a pivotal part to play in securing the best possible successive leadership for schools and opportunities for children.

Future Leaders is a unique programme that aims to address this leadership shortage, as well as educational inequality and underachievement, by attracting and cultivating a new generation of exceptional leaders for challenging urban schools. Each Summer, a new Cohort of approximately 80 participants are intensively trained, coached, and mentored specifically towards becoming a Deputy Head the following year and a Headteacher within four years of joining the programme.

It recognizes that “Good leadership is at the heart of every good school. A strong Headteacher, backed by an able leadership team and governing body, is vital for success.” (Higher Standards, Better Schools for All 2005, p.99) and therefore ensures a pool of senior leaders with proven leadership qualities.

FEdS is a unique network of blue-chip companies, educational organisations, government agencies and others who work in the learning and skills domain. Our members value FEdS because we create a fusion of thinking across sectors that need, now more than ever, to find solutions and new ways of working - together.

Many FEdS member organisations have employees who are school and college governors and they could use some support and advice. Working with our partner organisations such as the School Governors' One Stop Shop (SGOSS), we are developing a networked community for your use as an employee governor where all members of your company who are school or college governors can 'meet' to share views, advice and information.

We provide senior, experienced people in education, business and government with a neutral space to think, talk and take initiatives that will help to improve the provision of lifelong learning and skills in the UK. It is work we support with a programme of seminars, conferences and dinners and with a highly valued intelligence service incorporating up-to-date briefings, newsletters and policy papers.
