School Governors' One-Stop Shop and the Chartered Management Institute

“How
we educate today’s school children will have a dramatic effect on the quality of the leaders of tomorrow.” - Chris Kinsella, acting Chief Executive, CMI

School Governance is a unique educational volunteering opportunity. The vast majority of those who become governors share a common passion to help children receive the best possible education, and realise their aspirations and expectations. They derive great satisfaction from this. At the same time there is now significant research- based proof of the skills development opportunities that the role of school governor can provide. School Governors work in partnership with Head Teachers and the Senior Management Team in critical areas such as finance, recruitment and selection, policy, and the school’s future. The pace of change in education is so unrelenting that it is almost impossible NOT to gain new experiences and skills in a new environment.

School Governors’ One-Stop Shop has now entered into an agreement with the Chartered Management Institute to offer managers they have recruited as school governors the opportunity to translate the skills that governors acquire into professional recognition.

The Chartered Management Institute is:

  • The only chartered professional body in the UK dedicated to promoting the highest standards in management and leadership excellence. It has more than 86,000 members.
  • The only chartered body in the UK that awards management and leadership qualifications and provides professional recognition, setting the standards that others must follow.

As an SGOSS recruited governor you can save up to £90 on the usual CMI joining fee and become a member from just £118.  You can also save £200 in obtaining the coveted Chartered Manager award, the only accolade that proves your impact in business.

In relation to Chartered Manager skill requirements, governance links directly to all six categories, ie Managing Information and Knowledge, Managing Activities and Resources, Managing Self, Leading People, Managing Change and Meeting Customer Needs.

As an individual when you join the CMI you’re making a statement about your standards and determination to continue to develop your management skills.

Running a school in today’s environment mirrors the way many businesses are, and should be, managed. In these circumstances, the skills that the professional business community have been developing for years need to be replicated for the benefit of the education community and I welcome the chance to work with CMI to ensure schools benefit from the professionalism and capability that their members have to offer.” Steve Acklam , Chief Executive SGOSS
